(Martin, Yacoub) Album: Stronger – Single / Oops!... I Did It Again
The title track may have gotten the press, but “Stronger” is the crowning achievement on Oops!... I Did It Again. With the sound of a synth foghorn and a growling holler, Spears delivers one of her best early dance tracks over the course of 3 minutes and 23 seconds. Gone is the melancholy teen from the …Baby One More Time era who spent song after song pining for love (often unrequited), and in her place stands a confident, independent, and unapologetic women serving up a high-quality empowerment pop anthem. The song even references (then dismisses) lyrics from her first hit. Lest you need reminding, her loneliness ain’t killing her anymore. “Stronger” is the perfect encapsulation of an early Spears hit. The song is full of Britney-isms and vocal modifications, but she is also in strong voice, hitting that incredible sustained B4 upon exiting the middle eight. The stormy, aggressive production was a departure from her sleek europop sound. You get the sense listening to this that Britney was coming into her own. The message rang loud and clear: this is a woman in charge, and she is a force to be reckoned with.
