(Spears, Michaels, Tranter, Monson) Album: Glory
As with many releases of the late 2010’s, Spears kicked off the Glory era with her lead single (see “Make Me”) followed by a series of rapidly released promo singles to build hype in the lead-up to the album’s release. “Private Show” was the second song released to the public, and we were not ready. It’s an R&B doo-wop track from another world, and it’s also Britney at her most free and fun. Her vocals range from uninhibited to almost comically manic: “Work it, work it, boy watch me work it/Slide down my poll watch me spin it and twerk it.” It’s an ode to female sexuality by someone who understands that being sexy doesn’t necessarily mean taking yourself too seriously. The song, sharing a title with a Spears perfume, was heavily promoted and received a (shortened) video treatment that rivaled the haphazard Randee St. Nicholas version of “Make Me.” “Private Show,” seems to have split fans down the middle, but it was a bit refreshing to see taking chances and getting weird in a way that we did not see on the album’s first single.
