(Spears, Michaels, Tranter, Monson)
Album: Glory
Making comparisons between herself and her (ex) lover’s new sidepiece was not unexplored territory for Spears, having touched on the topic in “Shattered Glass” and the unreleased Britney-era track “She’ll Never Be Me.” But whereas those previous songs were empowering kiss-offs, Spears runs a range of emotions from excited anticipation to bewildered shock in this midtempo electropop track that dabbles at points in acoustic country. This is one track where Britney’s trademark mid-nasal voice takes a backseat to a more soulful, sultry tone that likely better aligns with her natural register. Tranter pointed specifically to this song when he described Spears’s songwriting talents as a revelation: “Britney Spears Has really cool, f*cked-up ideas for songs.” Hard to disagree.
