Album: I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman – Single / Britney

If you ever thought that the Britney album was a bit schizophrenic, well, you may have a point. It’s rumored that it is actually an amalgamation of two separate intended releases that had very distinct vibes – the first was a complete Crossroads soundtrack (with tracks like “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” and “Anticipating”) and a more mature offering (a la “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Lonely”) to follow. These two concepts were supposedly abandoned and elements of both were incorporated into what would become Britney. Songwriters Max Martin and Rami teamed up with Dido to pen the piano ballad “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” the focal song of Spears’s coming of age film “Crossroads,” and the softest, most sensitive offering on the album. One of Spears’s stronger ballads (that key change!), she conveys a sincerity and winsomeness that sell what could have been an eyerollingly sappy song. It does, however, feel oddly placed between the angsty rocker “Lonely” and the club ready “Boys.” Considering the moment in Spears’s career, the song seemed a bit young for her, or at least the persona she was projecting at the time. Also, while the title’s sentiment is appreciated, the phraseology feels a bit clunky. Perhaps it could have just been entitled, “Not a Girl?” Still, the song gave us some of Spears’s loveliest live vocals and a visually stunning music video in the American canyons. Probably the best rendition of the song is her live performance at the 2002 American Music Awards.
