Album: Circus (Bonus/International Editions)
Britney has a pension for singing songs about outdated modes of communication. Yes, there is still email, and yes, there was a time when someone might “e-mail your heart” but it was a very specific post-internet and pre-texting/DM-ing that forever froze that song in the late 90s. For her double entendre filled “Phonography,” Spears purrs about “buttons coming loose” and dialing “star 69 for that…” The wordplay deserves a standing ovation, but does anyone really know what *69 does anymore? Does anyone have buttons? The thing is, this song is too delicious to fault her for obsolete references. This is a euro-dance romp with the vocals delivered in an almost chant-like cadence. It’s one of Spears’s most sneakily infectious songs that it’s a shame it didn’t make the standard edition of Circus.
