73. Let Me Be (2001)

Writer: Top Britney SongsTop Britney Songs

(Spears, Schwartz, Kierulf)

Album: Britney / On the Line (Soundtrack)

After “I’m a Slave 4 U,” the first Britney track made available to the public in full was “Let Me Be,” which made its debut on the Lance Bass film soundtrack for On the Line. Another Spears-penned tune (along with Josh Schwartz and Brian Kierulf), it’s clear that she harnesses anger to fuel creativity. Over an acoustic guitar and R&B mid-tempo beat, Spears use her lower register (where she does some of her strongest singing) and adds some signature vocal fry to give this guy a piece of her mind. A solid, empowering album cut, it has a distinctly early 2000s production that may date it a bit, but the songwriting itself stands the test of time.
