Album: Blackout
Spears threw caution into the wind when making her fifth album, flouting convention and embracing the fun and the bizarre. Here we have a gospel choir, the relentless “pew pew” of digital lasers, and a distorted take on the word “fuckery.” If you think that sounds like a lot, well, you’d be right, but the genius of the song is that it leaves us wanting more. Being a woman of contradictions herself, of course she would record a song entitled “hot as ice.” A sassy stomper finds a very pitched Britney singing such memorable lines as “Living legend, you can look but don’t touch.” This track proved that no one was having a better time than Britney. A demo of this song leaked prior to Blackout’s official release with Spears’s vocals less altered than on the final cut. Some may prefer this version, though the vocal effects are a specific artistic choice that is in line sonically with the rest of the album. Only those who take themselves too seriously would find a reason not to smile at this song. The rest of us will be on the dancefloor.
