63. Sometimes (1999)

(Elofsson)

Album: Sometimes – Single / …Baby One More Time

The follow-up to Spears’s international smash debut was a more subdued affair. Stylistically, “Sometimes” fit in nicely with other teen pop fare of the era (a la “Quit Playing Games with My Heart” by the Backstreet Boys), momentarily setting aside the trailblazing sound of her album’s title track. Lyrically, the song leaves a bit to be desired, as an apparent attempt at innocence comes across instead as crippling social anxiety. Perhaps a reason a more mature Spears occasionally expressed some displeasure with this track. Still, despite it not being nearly as groundbreaking as her debut, Spears delivers stellar vocals and one of the best middle eights of any of her singles. The song’s popularity was definitely propelled by Spears’s newfound superstardom and rode the coattails of the “…Baby One More Time” mania, it’s the perfect earworm to stoke the memories of nostalgic millennials reminiscing about the smooth, bright pop sounds of the summer of 1999.
