6. Breathe on Me (2003)

(Lee, Anderson, Greene)

Album: In the Zone

There are missed opportunities, and then there are downright tragedies. That “Breathe on Me” was never released as a single falls into the latter category. The perfect marriage of artist and song, Spears’s airy and subdued vocals are mesmerizing over this the pulsing beat of this atmospheric Euro trance beat. Written by songwriting team Stephen Lee, Steve Anderson, and Lisa Greene, “Breathe on Me” was actually conceived in one hour as a back-up idea in case another project didn’t pan out. Spears has stated that this tune is “supposed to get you in the mood.” The song has drawn comparisons to Madonna’s Erotica and Kylie Minogue, but this song also ranks among such sensual classics as Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” and “I Feel Love.” It’s that good. The song builds tension throughout, building to its middle eight where, after a cheeky nod to a Lauren Bacall quotation (“Just put your lips together… and blow”), the song hits a breathy climax that feels literal enough where it can get awkward listening to the track in mixed company. The song was accompanied by an appropriately steamy performance during her Onyx Hotel Tour which included locking lips with one of her scantily clad dancers. It’s a bit hard to believe that “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” was on the previous album just two short years prior. Britney the Woman had arrived. And she was delivering some dance classics.
