58. Perfect Lover (2007)

(Hills, Washington, Hilson, Araica)

Album: Blackout

“Perfect Lover” is one of Spears’s most overlooked and underrated album cuts. Its propulsive electro-dance beat seems like it could have served as a precursor to Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” and is every bit as good. True to the theme of Blackout, it’s Britney at her most thirsty, and she is the one firmly in control. Spears shows vocal agility in the verses, bouncing around her lower and upper register, with her breathy falsettos taking over for the chorus. This song also boasts one of her best middle eights. One of the only downsides of making such a solid album as Blackout with no real bad eggs is that worthy songs that would have been standouts on other albums never get their moment to shine. Exhibit A: “Perfect Lover.”
