Album: I Wanna Go – Single / Femme Fatale
Max Martin had been the master of pop hooks for over a decade, and in this high-NRG dance-pop gem he plugged in a whistle hook that captured the fun and quirkiness of this song. Yet another successful Spears/Martin collaboration, Britney sounds deceptively bubbly while being downright dirty. The stutter-y chorus is immediately infectious, where a thumping beat gives way to a production explosion by the time the repeat rolls around. The early New Order comparisons are apt, as the sound is very reminiscent of their classic “Blue Monday.” The song gave Spears her third top 10 single from Femme Fatale on the Billboard Hot 100, her first album to chart that many songs within the top 10. The music video showed us that Spears could also laugh at herself, opting for anti-paparazzi action/comedy fare instead of what could have been another choreography-heavy dance video. I mean, “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder” being on the marquee is everything.
