Album: Oops!... I Did It Again (Deluxe/International Editions)
With a beat reminiscent of “Eternal Flame” by the Bangles, this guitar-driven Britney ballad is an ode to (spoiler alert!) her own reflection. Included as a bonus track in some regions, Spears’s vocals are sweet but powerful, even if the song makes more sense as a late 80s or 90s ballad. Oops!... I Did It Again was recorded at a very busy time for Spears, and whereas future albums would prove to have treasure troves of bonus and unreleased material, the same cannot be said for her sophomore effort. Of the bonus tracks, “Girl in the Mirror” is one of the strongest, but none are classics. Nonetheless, we should have known to cherish the days when the bonus tracks served as pleasant additions that did not outshine the standard tracks. On future releases Spears had a frustrating habit of hiding masterpieces on the deluxe or international editions of her albums.
