If you’d like to hear Spears at her vocal best, please show yourself directly to the 3:11 mark of this track, where she absolutely lays into a beautiful C5: “Where are you NOOOOOOW?” From a technical standpoint, this is one of Britney’s finest offerings, with three (!) key changes, killer belting, and some her iconic if underappreciated vibrato. An absolute vocal showcase. If only the song itself lived up to Spears’s performance. If you remember this song, it’s because of her vocal slayage and not because of the song itself. It’s surprising that this is a Max Martin track (along with Andreas Carlsson), as I would not say that many of his other songs fall under the category of “pleasant but forgettable.” Thematically it would fit in better with the tracklist of her debut album. Still, we are eternally thankful to have these vocals on record and will continue to use this song as exhibit A when making the case that any attempts to downplay her vocal talent have no merit.
