Album: Blackout
If Blackout were to be interpreted as a cohesive narrative documenting a particularly eventful night of clubbing for Britney and her posse – dancing away her troubles, pursuing love and lust on her own terms – then the Neptunes-produced midtempo “Why Should I Be Sad?” is when the club lights turn on and it’s time to stumble home as some of life’s realities come creeping back in. It would make no sense on the album anywhere but the final track, throwing a bit of cold water on what had been a party. Ostensibly directed at her ex-husband, the song is the most specifically personal content on Blackout and gives a glimpse into the type of introspective album Spears could have made. We’re happy with the glimpse, but thankful she took the album in the direction that she did.
