121. Perfume (2013)

(Spears, Furler, Braide)

Album: Perfume – Single / Britney Jean

Spears teamed up with Sia, one of the 2010s most sought-after songwriters, to co-write Britney Jean’s most prominent ballad. Having already released about a dozen fragrances on her perfume line by 2013, it’s fitting that scent is how she marks her man in this tragic tale of a girl trapped in a love triangle. Spears emotes effectively through the verses, operating predominantly in the comforts of her lower register, also showcasing some solid mid-belts. The chorus mostly hovers around one note, making it a little bit monotonous, yet she still emanates vulnerability. The Joseph Kahn-directed music video, having been toned down from an alleged murder for hire plotline, is fairly unremarkable. While one of the more solid offerings on Britney Jean, “Perfume” doesn’t hold up nearly as well as some of Spears’s other ballads.
