102. Alien (2013)

(Spears, Diaz, Preston, Trynor, Orbit) Album: Britney Jean

This ethereal mid-tempo ballad opened Spears’s Britney Jean and briefly gave us high hopes for the rest of the record. This album had been marketed as her “most personal” to date with co-writing credits on each track. Though many of the other tracks were letdowns, “Alien” was one of the album’s few high points. Spears’s vocals are very treated, yet still vulnerable and reflective. A distracting production glitch late in the song became something of a controversy between William Orbit and will.i.am. The track gained some traction due to strong downloads and was considered for the third US single from Britney Jean before the decision was made to stop promotion of her most troubled album and look forward to a brighter era.
